No, alt.newsaholicism.just.press.n would be about right. This is a rather dated discussion: I can't find a header but the following has to be from '86 or maybe '87; I had a lot of free time back then. The addresses and phone numbers are wrong, although the email address will probably still find its way to me. NEWSAHOLICISM: WHAT IS IT? A UCD chemistry professor discovered the cause of newsaholicism was the newsahol molecule, which is pictured below. The newsahol molecule is a strange molecule. It is produced by talk.* rec.* other newsaholics (either real or pseudo) | | and reproduces at any newsfeed. The newsahol soc.* - rn - rn - comp.* molecule then lies dormant in the local | | computer until an unsuspecting news reader net.* sci.* types "rn" or "readnews". Then, the newsahol molecule reproduces and sends its child to Newsahol Molecule the reader's terminal. The newsahol molecule is absorbed through the eyes of the reader (schientists are still not sure exactly how). The newsahol molecule then lies dormant for an undetermined amount of time. When the newsahol molecule comes out of its dormant state, it begins to affect the mind of the afflicted person. That person first begins to feel a strange desire to read news. As the disease progresses, the victim feels a desire to post news. The disease then begins to eat away at the victim, causing the victim to require more and more new The final stages of newsaholicism are usually terminal if the victim does not receive help. The terminal newsaholic generally dies of starvation, since s/he looses all desire to do anything but read news. Research on newsaholicism has led to several treatment methods. They all have several characteristics in common. First, the treatment must begin before newsaholicism becomes permanent. The treatment must have some appeal to the newsaholic. This appeal must be great enough to overcome, for short periods of time, the urge to read news. The treatment must also cause a dulling of the newsaholic's mind, and it must be addicting (at least temporarily). The addiction helps the newsaholic to take enough of the treatment to dull his or her mind. As his or her mind is dulled, it becomes harder to read news. Soon, the newsaholic will become absorbed in the treatment that s/he will forget to read news. At this point, it is usually safe to remove the newsaholic from his/her terminal. Treatment must continue until enough brain cells have been damaged to impair news reading ability. After this occurs, rehabilitation can occur. Treatments under use by Newsaholics Anonymous include alcohol, various narcotics, caffeine (for minor cases -- seldom used), and sex. Each has its advantages and disadvantages, which are fully explained before treatment begins. If you are a newsaholic, we can help you.
